Event Speakers and Talks:
14:00 – 14:10 Welcome and Introductions
14:10 – 14:35 Dr Tom Lawrence – ASHRAE Director At Large and Distinguished Lecturer ‘What ASHRAE is Doing to Become a Global Society.’
ASHRAE unveiled in 2012 a rebranding of the Society that in part helped emphasize ASHRAE’s growing worldwide membership, and also that the structure and services of the Society will continually to be evolving. Essentially all of the growth in membership of ASHRAE in recent years is occurring outside of North America, and the number of chapters, sections and student branch groups outside North America is rapidly expanding. Just as importantly, the Society is recognized globally as one of the go-to organizations in the HVAC&R industry and for topics related to the built environment as a whole.
Globalization is a two-way street that the ASHRAE membership should not be afraid of, but rather embrace. In many ways, the globalization of ASHRAE reflects what is happening in society as a whole. ASHRAE is investing in the tools and resources to help serve the industry connected with the global built environment. This talk provides an update on what ASHRAE is doing to become a globally focused Society, the resources available, organizational changes that have occurred or are being considered, and the positive outcomes that are happening as a result of all this.
14:35 – 14:40 Q&A
14:40 – 15:25 Dr Tom Lawrence – ASHRAE Director At Large and Distinguished Lecturer ‘The Coming Age of a Smart Grid and Smart Buildings’
The smart grid is coming and in that future era buildings will be interacting even more with the electric utilities. The communication will be in both directions, with the utility working to balance the grid supply and demand through methods such as signaling requests for demand response measures, real-time price adjustments, etc. This is a new and evolving field and, while there are some differences in the need for and how a smart grid might function in the various regions of the world, there are some common factors as well. This seminar provides an overview of the smart grid particularly as it relates to buildings and their systems.
