ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a global society advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment. The Society and its more than 54,000 members worldwide focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability.
An ASHRAE Section typically comprise 10-40 Members, sponsored by an existing chapter, region or sub-region and a Section is therefore an alternative to a Chapter which requires >40 Members.
Scotland geographically fits into the ASHRAE Region at Large (RAL), which consists of Europe, the Middle East and Western Asia, and our sponsor is ASHRAE Region at Large – Sub Region B.
Members typically include (but not limited to) consulting engineers, building and system designers, contractors, manufacturers, utilities, educational institutions and sales representatives.
Who is involved
An ASHRAE Section requires a board consisting of a President or Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.
Each year the board is rotated between members at the end of June. However due to the initial effort involved in launching a new Section they may stand for longer within the first year e.g. ratified in January 2017 and board rotated June 2018.
A steering group (typically comprising of 2-5 ASHRAE Members) has been developed to organise the process for selecting the board and setting up of the Section. While members of the steering committee can be part of the board they can only be voted in by members.
When will it happen
Tim Wentz (ASHRAE President and Director At Large) will inaugurate the ASHRAE Scotland Section on the 7th April 2017 in Glasgow, after attending the CIBSE ASHRAE Technical Symposium 2017 at Loughborough University between the 5th-6th April 2017.
See the Membership section of our website to find out more about why we are looking to form an ASHRAE Scotland Section.
